Reinder Schmidt

ARTIST

Reinder Schmidt (b. 1993, Arnhem, Netherlands) is a Dutch artist working at the intersection of textile, fashion, and abstract art.

Originally trained in fashion design at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design, his early work explored garment construction and experimental materials. Over time, his focus shifted towards sustainability, craftsmanship, and the inherent value of materials.

This transition led to the development of his “Textile Landscapes,” a body of work constructed from discarded fabrics and production remnants. By collecting, stitching, and reworking these materials, Schmidt transforms textile waste into layered, tactile compositions that emphasise texture, structure, and depth.

Often working with a restrained or monochromatic palette, he allows the physical qualities of the materials to take precedence, revealing subtle variations in surface and form. Each fragment retains a sense of its previous life, embedding history and narrative within the finished work.

Schmidt’s practice elevates sewing from a functional craft to a considered artistic process, challenging perceptions of value and waste while offering a thoughtful exploration of transformation, materiality, and sustainability.
