Stephen Cimini
ARTIST
Geometric abstract paintings exploring the balance between structure and intuition, blending architectural precision with organic texture and color.
Originally from the small town of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Stephen Cimini is primarily a self-taught artist, though he also studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
A recipient of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Grant, awarded to artists of recognized achievement, his work is held in numerous private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. He currently lives and works in New York City, where he continues to exhibit at various galleries throughout the country.
Building on the architectural origins that have informed his work for over two decades, Cimini describes his compositions as random symmetry—a balance achieved without a fixed pattern, allowing harmonious, meditative structures to emerge. He often references the golden mean as a guiding principle, subtly visible in the underlying geometry of his paintings
Working with oil paint and cold wax medium, Cimini builds layered surfaces where organic textures evolve within the restraint of geometric frameworks. Through this process, each piece develops its own emotional atmosphere—an interplay between deliberate structure and intuitive discovery. His color choices shift between carefully planned series and spontaneous, instinctive responses, reflecting his belief that color is a constantly unfolding mystery.
Running in Circles, Cimini’s most recent series, explores the interplay between curved and linear forms. Departing from his predominantly angular style, these paintings introduce circular and elliptical shapes that evoke motion, tension, and continuity. Created with oil and cold wax on Encaustiflex, a microfiber material made from recycled soda bottles, and mounted on cradled panels, the series invites quiet reflection through nuanced textures, layered color harmonies, and a shifting sense of spatial balance.
