Woven Art as Architecture
Within Dock Shed’s dramatic 7-metre-high lobby, Art Story has created a series of sculptural rope installations that bring warmth and tactility to the space. Part of the Canada Water masterplan, the building’s industrial interior has been softened through crafted interventions that encourage people to pause and connect.
The three woven rope screens sit at the heart of the transformed lobby – they shape the experience of the space, dividing the open foyer while preserving a sense of transparency and flow. Inspired by traditional weaving, dockside craft and the building’s warehouse context, the pieces combine practical function with a strong crafted presence.
Sketching, prototyping and material testing were integral to our process. One of the key technical challenges was incorporating solid timber into a composition based around flexible woven forms. Through research and development, CNC-machining and layered construction, we created timber elements that appear as clean, graphic lines running through the rope structure.
From concept development to fabrication and installation, the project demonstrates our ability to combine creative design, material experimentation and technical problem-solving.
